General Education Development - GED

Citywide Outreach Ministries is a multicultural non-profit organization that serves families and promotes community advocacy. We offer GED tutoring for ages 17 years and older (16 with exceptions)on all education levels. Volunteers assist students in developing the skills needed to pass the GED exam. We also offer online practice tests.

In 2006, 100% of the students with the documented goal of obtaining a GED within the fiscal year met their goal.

GED exams consist of the following five tests:

  1. GED Writing Skills Test
This will test the test taker's ability to write using Standard English and is divided into two separate sections. A multiple choice section tests your skills in organizing and structuring sentences, usage, punctuation and capitalization. Another section requires writing a two hundred word essay, testing the test taker’s ability to compose and express his or her thoughts.
  2. GED Social Studies Test
U.S. geography, history, behavioral science, economics, and political science are the areas covered in this test. The test taker is asked a series of questions based on articles and essays that discuss social science topics. Maps, charts, and related graphs are also covered.
  3. GED Science Test
Be prepared for fairly long questions that include essays, diagrams, and charts covering life and physical sciences. It is expected that the test taker will have an understanding of what they read and have a fairly solid knowledge of science.
  4. GED Literature and Arts Test
Test takers will be expected to understand the meaning, theme, tone, and mood of several types of reading covered with this test, including selections of short stories, poetry, and novels. They are expected to clearly express themselves in their responses.
  5. GED Mathematics Test
This test covers arithmetic, algebra, and geometry with many questions presented as sentence problems. There are two sections to the test. One section can be taken with a calculator. The other section is completed without one. A standard Casio calculator will be provided by test administrators. It is a good idea to practice using a calculator beforehand.
